At The Break of Day

When the sun is up, and stars are gone

I hear my mother say,

"It’s six o’clock, get out of bed

Or you’ll be late today!"

I just can’t seem to get awake

Enough to understand

And soon my eyes are coaxing me

"Oh, go to sleep again."

So I just snuggle down once more

For just a wee cat-nap,

But it’s only half a second

Until I hear a rap.

Then I say "Yes’m, I am up,"

In a sleepy sort of way.

But how I hate to leave my bed

Just at the break of day.
